Gazipur Correspondent: Four members of a family among five were killed as Kolkata-bound ‘Maitree Express’ from Dhaka rammed a private car near Goalbathan rail crossing area in Kaliakoir upazila of the district on Sunday morning.
The deceased were identified as Laki Akhter, 30, wife of one Ripon from Goalbathan area, their daughter Riva Akhter, 8, Tahmida Khatun, 31, wife of Ripon’s cousin Bidyut, her son Talha, 12 and the private car driver Minhaz, 45.
Police quoting locals said that the train collided with the private car carrying them on the way to a local Christian Missionary School around 9:00 am.
At one point, the train hit and dragged the car about a mile away smashing it on to the Sonakhali Bridge leaving the people aboard dead on spot.
Later locals and Fire Service unit recovered the bodies and wrecked car.
Kaliakoir Fire Service station master Apurba Baul told that, the bodies were handed over to family members.
Kaliakoir thana Sub-Inspector (SI) Russel said that the northern rail link with Dhaka remained temporarily halted after the incident as one of Maitree Express coaches was derailed.
